When coming up with project ideas, I noticed there was a new head spa that just opened up within walking distance from my house. They didn’t have a website, and I wanted to create one for them free of charge and without their asking just to gain experience. It was a win/win; they needed a website and I wanted experience working with a real world client.
This work was inspired by a few different local massage clinics and head spa locations around my area. I wanted to get an idea of what style of website they were going to look for before they even started looking. The idea of an image slideshow as a hero image was inspired by my local dentists website, and the color palette was inspired by traditional zen teachings and principles.
I started out brainstorming and researching, trying to find out what this business’ vibe was and what their philosophy was. I wanted to know how they want their clients to feel when experiencing their clinic/services. I actually went in person and went into their clinic. After getting the vibe, I took to wire frame creation and landed on a wire frame that I felt was best (with the help from some colleagues). Next was the standard HTML/CSS layout and code work. After this was completed, I wanted to go above and beyond and show the company (and the world) that I can also handle complex coding tasks that aren’t just standard HTML/CSS. I used JavaScript to build an in-website cost calculator for each individual package (and prices in combining them). I also demonstrated that I am able to pull and post data from a database, use an API to display information, and check if a user's inputs are properly formatted in real time when filling out a form. All of this was put in as a demonstration of my abilities as a web developer for the head spa, but also for my portfolio and future jobs.
The end result was a webpage with a lot of power, and something I am proud of. The company in the end appreciated my design work and are working on implementing the color palette into their clinic, and then will get back in touch with me on the launch of the website when they need it. Once implemented, this webpage will give this company a huge leg up in gathering new clientele. They will also gain a foothold in the digital media space, something their competition may not have.
